Case study
Engineering and scaling of an unmanned retail concept (Quiosk)
At WILVO, we believe smart engineering makes the difference between a good idea and a scalable product. When Quiosk approached us with the ambition to further professionalize and scale their self-service concept, a clear challenge emerged: the existing design was too complex and costly for large-scale rollout. Together, we worked on a solution in which design, manufacturability, and scalability come together seamlessly.
Approach
From a complex design to a scalable product
Quiosk developed an innovative self-service concept for fuel stations, charging locations, and mobility hubs. The starting point: a compact, robust, and user-friendly unit capable of operating fully unattended. To make the concept optimally scalable, both the construction and the production process were fundamentally redesigned. This resulted in a more efficient build, lower production costs, and a design better suited for serial production.
Working closely with the team at Quiosk, we completely revised the product from a Design for Manufacturing (DfM) approach. Not just optimize, but fundamentally improve.
Engineering
Scalable in-house production
Our engineers redesigned the Quiosk's housing and body with a focus on efficiency and reliability. This resulted in:
- A simplified construction with fewer parts
- Improved ease of assembly
- Application of more durable and robust materials
- A modular system that is easily expandable
These optimizations not only made the product stronger, but also more consistent in quality and easier to produce.
Production & scalability
Ready for growth
An essential part of the process was preparing the product for series production by:
- Reduction of the number of parts
- Optimization of the production process
- Standardization of components
We significantly reduced production costs while simultaneously increasing production capacity.
The modular design also makes it possible to easily connect and roll out multiple Quiosks across different locations, making the concept directly scalable.
Development process
Continuous improvement, driven by real-world practice
The process consisted of:
- Analysis of the existing design
- Joint brainstorming sessions
- Multiple iterations in prototyping
- Testing for ease of use, reliability and manufacturability
By continuously testing for both engineering and use, we developed a solution that is not only technically sound, but also performs in practice.
Impact
More reliability, lower costs
The redevelopment of the Quiosk has a direct impact on both operator and end user:
- Higher reliability and less downtime
- Longer vending machine life
- Lower operational costs
- Consistent and recognizable brand image
The result is a solution that is not only functionally strong, but also more commercially attractive for large-scale rollout.
Result
A scalable and future-proof solution
The collaboration between Quiosk and WILVO Development has resulted in a cost-effective, robust and scalable product that is ready for further growth. A solution that is easier to produce, faster to deploy and better suited to market needs. With the optimized Quiosk, the road is open for further scale-up. The concept is ready to be rolled out more widely, both nationally and internationally.
Collaboration
The collaboration was characterized by short lines of communication, speed and a shared focus on results.
“Thanks to WILVO’s efforts, we were able to make Quiosk not only cheaper, but also a lot more robust, recognizable and user-friendly.”
